IB50K Finalists 2019 Edition
The i-M2C project consists of a multiparameter control and monitoring device that was designed and built in the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Biochemistry and Biological Sciences (FBCB) of UNL. The proposal was devised by an interdisciplinary team made up of Axel Kemmerer, a Bachelor of Biotechnology student (FBCB-UNL) and professor at the Department of Physics; Pablo Javier Gonzalez, Assistant Researcher (CONICET) and Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics (FBCB-UNL); Tomás Turi, Computer Engineering student (UNL); Ernesto Jerónimo Kemmerer, Specialist in Linkage and Technology Transfer (UNL).
Regarding the device, the function of i-M2C is to control what happens inside a bioreactor or fermenter, in which value-added products can be generated, such as beverages (beers, wines), foods (yogurts), medicines ( hormones, biosimilars), fuels (bioethanol), bioplastics, among others. To do this, i-M2C monitors, interprets and controls key physicochemical variables of a bioprocess, such as temperature, pH, oxygen and/or carbon dioxide saturation, etc.
The novelty of iM2C is its unique and customizable design according to what the client needs, which reduces its cost considerably when compared to equipment from international brands with similar features. In this way, both the scientific-academic sector and SMEs can access a technology that is sometimes prohibitive due to its high cost, but which is necessary to optimize efficiency and reduce production costs of a certain bioprocess.
It was a very nice and enriching experience, with a lot of growth and learning.
We believe that with effort and work you can contribute and make positive changes in society.
-Axel Kemmerer
